Researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Science and Engineering recently discovered a new alloy that converts heat directly into electricity. This revolutionary method of energy conversion is still in the early stages of development, but it may have a widespread impact on generating electricity from waste heat. The researchers said the material could be used to capture the car’s exhaust gas and produce electricity for use in hybrid car batteries. Other possible future uses include capturing waste heat or ocean temperature differences from industry and power plants and generating electricity. The research team is studying the commercial viability of the technology.
