《隋史遗文》在一定程度上摆脱了正史的束缚,所叙内容多有偏离史实之处,但写作方法却更接近了现代意义上的小说,小说的文体特征得到了强化。小说在叙事上超越了编年体小说以帝王为中心、以时间的自然发展来编织历史事件和人物的传统模式,全书以秦琼为中心,以秦琼的传奇式经历来联络其他人物和事件,小说的重心也从事件转向了人物,人物形象塑造成为创作中最为核心的任务。在人物形象塑造方面,注重写人物成长的经历,揭示了人物性格的复杂性。这些变化体现了小说家文体意识的自觉,标志着历史小说创作进入了一个新的阶段。
