艺术的终结、突围及其进步是紧密联系在一起的,在黑格尔的理论中,艺术无法承担精神的表达或实现其功能而最终转向宗教和哲学,艺术的终结有其内在必然性。在丹托的理论中,“艺术的终结”不是叙事的对象即艺术终结了,而是叙事的形式终结了,其实质是艺术对哲学的“反终结”;而在卡斯比特的理论中,后现代消费主义的“艺术终结”虽然导致了“后艺术”时代的艺术之殇,但“后艺术”作为当前艺术范式的一种转型,其实可以看作是艺术的一种突围或进步。所以,艺术并没有死亡,也没有终结,艺术只有不断地扬弃自我,向死而生,才能不断超越和进步。
