1941年冬天,青岛西广场贫民窟起了一场大火,近千灾民流离失所,无家可归。当局为解燃眉之急,在台柳路西端兴建“东广场”安置灾民。原西广场居民多以收、拣破烂为生,在东广场定居后,不少人又重操旧业,把拣来的破布头、碎铜烂铁加工成鞋底、烟筒等日用品摆地摊出卖,养家糊口。有的居民也把自家的旧货拿到这里卖,每逢礼拜天人特别多,非常热闹。于是“礼拜集”就在青岛叫开了,也有人叫它“破烂市”。
