“孟姜女”调是我国流传范围最广、影响最大的民间小调之一,“五更鼓”则是用闽南方言演唱的传统民歌曲调,是闽南群众耳熟能详的民间小调之一,也是台湾福佬系民歌的经典曲目,而“五更鼓”实际就是“孟姜女”调的变体,特别是“五更鼓”与闽南方言紧密融合,除吸收明清俗曲“孟姜女”的旋律外,又与闽台音乐相融合,从而使这首曲调悦耳动听,委婉流畅,深受闽台人民群众的喜爱。“孟姜女”的故事、音乐在全国各地广为传播,其与各地音乐、方言相结合,演绎出丰富多彩的变体。学术界对“孟姜女”调展开过深刻而广泛的研究,总结如下:1.对《孟姜女》故事的形成、发展的系统研究。主要成果有历史学家、民俗学家顾颉刚和路工的相关专著,其中有涉及一些《孟姜女》的音乐
