弥漫着《圣经》气息的《简.爱》在文本及作者的宗教意识方面饱受争议。以叙事结构角度解读《简.爱》,指出简与罗切斯特的爱情经历了“失乐园”到“复乐园”的演变,是对《圣经》结构的完整模仿;但是伊甸园场景、简的出走和回归却又颠覆了《圣经》的原型意象,折射出文本和小说作者矛盾的宗教观。矛盾的原因在于文本中蕴涵了浓厚的女性意识及个体本位主义价值观,这种女性意识与“神学”密切相连,进而造成了文本复杂的圣经情结。《简.爱》是“女性主义神学”的艺术化展现。
