海马海龙科动物，主要栖息于热带海中，中国沿海均有分布，但以海南为多，现已有人工养殖。海马含蛋白质，脂肪，多种氨基酸，另含乙酰胆碱酯酶，胆碱酯酶，蛋白酶等成分。中医认为其味甘，性温，入肝，肾经，有补肾壮阳，调气活血，催产，止痛，强心等功效，可治疗阳痿，遗尿，虚喘，难产，痔疮等。
