It is presently believed that the adhesion molecule on human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) may be the target molecule of glucuronoxymannin (GXM). GXM is a major component of the new Cryptococcus capsular material. Mouse experiments show that: PMN removal can increase the susceptibility to C. neoformans, and the use of recombinant granulocyte colony stimulating factor can enhance resistance, indicating that PMN play an important role in the fight against Cryptococcus neoformans infection.
