In early 1996, Phillips Laboratories, located at KirtLand Air Force Base, selected Hughes to develop advanced high-power microwave air defense suppression (HPM SEAD) advanced technology demonstration equipment. The $ 6.6 million contract required the company to deliver experimental hardware in January 1999. HPM SEAD is designed to “burn through” sensitive electronic devices in enemy integrated air defense systems with directional high-power, narrow-band RF sources. HPM devices will use strong pulsed power technology to produce the necessary power levels. During combat, HPMSEAD weapons will be deployed remotely and will need to be secured with limited information on the characteristics of the target. In addition, it can radiate radio to enemies
