明清时期虎患成为贵州地区严重的动物灾害,它严重地损害和干扰了人类的正常生活。面对各地频频发生的虎患,地方社会采取各种应对办法:捕杀是最有效的方法,它能直接消除虎患。但捕杀虎是不易的,只有采取防御的办法——作驱虎文,教谕大众通过“德”和“孝”的手段对虎进行感化,以达到“驱虎”的目的。当然,这些办法是不可能真正起作用的。从捕杀一驱虎一感化的过程可以看出:明清时期贵州的虎患的历史记录和记忆逐渐转化成了孝的隐喻。
