Doctors at the Manchester Whitington Hospital isolated a high-molecular-weight protein that they believed was accompanied by myocardial ischemia and regenerated capillaries. This protein may have a wide range of therapeutic indications. This protein has been identified as myocardial infarction angiogenesis factor (MIAF), similar to tumor angiogenesis factor (TAF) isolated from cancer tissues. TAF increases the number of solid tumors by regulating the ingrowth of blood vessels around the tumor. In an effort to find similar angiogenic factors in newly diagnosed patients with myocardial infarction, S Kumar et al. Analyzed myocardial samples from eight bodies within 48 hours of myocardial infarction. Using appropriate homogenization techniques and affinity chromatography analysis, 5 of 8 specimens isolated a substance very similar to the tumor angiogenic factor.
