In a lecture on the 25th anniversary of IGNOU, K. Radhakrishnan, chairman of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), said that the new radar imaging satellite-1 (RISAT-1), developed by India itself, Which will be launched in 2011. Once the satellite is successfully launched, it will significantly enhance India’s Earth observation capability and become an important milestone in the development of India’s space capabilities. Radhakrishnan said that India’s existing remote sensing satellites use mainly the visible and infrared bands and therefore can not shoot the earth through the clouds; and the RISAT-1 satellite has the capability of observing earthquakes all day long. Its spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is self-developed by ISRO and capable of working all day long to enhance India’s disaster response capability. The RISAT-1 satellite will also benefit the mapping and management of natural disasters such as floods and landslides, in addition to enhancing surveillance capabilities and helping to track threatening vessels.
