Oscar Wilde is not only an advocate of the British aestheticism movement, but also the most outstanding representative of aestheticism. His novel “Portrait of Dorian Gray” is the representative work of aestheticism at the end of 19th century, which can be regarded as the best manifestation of literature in “Art for Art”. In the final novel, Dorian committed suicide, which shows that one-sided pursuit of pleasing pleasure of hedonistic morality and out of life, beyond the moral of aestheticism is not true, and ultimately doomed to destruction. “The Portrait of Dorian Gray” is the only novel by Wilde and his comprehensive reflection of aesthetics. Therefore, it has been considered as a masterpiece of the aestheticism novel. The change of appearance of the protagonist and the portrait is the main thread that runs through the entire novel. The author analyzes Ostrow Wilde’s language charm from the perspective of the author’s description of the sensual description of the hero and the symbolic meaning contained in the portrait, and explains the artistic essence that the author hopes to convey.
