The Beijing autumn auction season kicked off last week to further confirm the pattern that emerged in Sotheby’s in Hong Kong last month in an overly cool art market. Due to the overseas financial crisis and the domestic fiscal squeeze, there was a crisis of abandoning quality of artwork. The art market in Beijing sidestepped the works of unnamed artists, and even established artists have stumbled on bland bids or unrealistic insured ones. What the investors are buying is nothing more than Chinese masterpieces, antiques and historically valuable works of art that are comparable to the Hong Kong market.
