红鳍东方鲀在日本的商品价值很高,活鱼每公斤高达1～1.5万日元。除作佳肴、泡酒食用外,还从其内脏(主要是卵巢)中提取河豚鱼毒素,每克售价在日本为4万多美元。因此,正大力开展人工养殖。红鳍东方鲀已成为继(鱼师)、鲷后的第三种重要养殖品种。目前,以中国、四国和九州为中心,有大小养殖单位二、三十个,1979年养二年鱼(实养一年半)几千至数万尾。养殖仅有四、五年历史,取得了一定的养殖技术经验,但还处于尚未真正确立的现状。人工种苗生产已初具规模,有二、三个民间企业也能生产40～50毫米苗几十万尾。山口县内海栽培渔业中心最近已能生产15～30毫米苗60～70万尾。种苗绝大多数用于放流,但随着养殖的发展,放流种苗逐年减少。
