In the United Kingdom, a new type of concrete was prototyped. It weighs less than a quarter of ordinary concrete, has a high strength and can also be bent. A new concrete unit in the UK has systematically produced this new ultra-light concrete and conducted field tests. The production series includes floor prefabricated panels, pipes, and fully assembled houses designed for use in the Third World. Two years ago, when the personnel involved in the study of cement composites, they specifically studied the method of strengthening the concrete with outer layers. They chose a polypropylene woven material. A thin layer of cement not exceeding one millimeter thick is coated on a layer of polypropylene, followed by a further layer of polypropylene material, and the same compounding is repeated until a certain thickness is reached. This product also has good insulation properties. If higher insulation performance is required, polystyrene particles can be added to the cement mix. Concrete prefabricated slabs reinforced with the new method have been laid at the entrance of the Belfast City Hall and are in normal use. This plate is half as thin as a normal concrete slab but can bear a heavy load.
