Researchers at the University of California at Santa Barbara are convinced that they have obtained evidence of how lead begins to damage the brain. Tissue culture (including mouse cells) research suggests that lead not only inhibits the growth of blood-brain barrier cells, but also damages the blood-brain barrier membrane, preventing the blood-brain barrier from blocking some substances that interfere with normal brain function. According to a recent report (Toxico-lory aod Applied pharmaco-logy, June 30, 1986), lead clearly causes blood-brain barrier membrane leakage, which can account for cerebral hemorrhage seen in lead poisoning patients, tissue swelling, and Nerve dysfunction.
