On May 31, 2013, the Book Expo America was lighted by a series of publications showing a beautiful and wonderful Wuxi like photography works of Wuxi Brahmā Palace, Painted Porcelain in Wuxi, and Travelling in Wuxi. What attracted participants most is Wuxi: Through an American’s Lens unveiled at the fair.
Wuxi: Through an American’s Lens was published under the collaboration between Wuxi and Foreign Languages Press Co., Ltd.. The writer of the book, Professor William Joseph from Wellesley College, with his camera and pen, recorded Wuxi during his first visit in 1972 and the second visit 40 years later to the same places in 2012 when he was 65. During the 40 years, Wuxi experienced dramatic changes. From the lens of a westerner, William depicted the same city, same things and same figures spanning 40 years. He depicted not only the fate of nobodies but also the great changes of Wuxi, showing us the “quantity of time” via a rich history.
The highlight of the book lies at that the writer, with emotional words, interpreted the great changes of China in 40 years from a foreigner’s perspective. In 1972, one month after President Richard M. Nixon's historic visit to China, the writer came to Wuxi for the first time, recording Wuxi, a famous city south of the Yangtze River and people’s live there through photos. By comparing the large number of historic photos with those he took 40 years later about the same places and people, William depicted vividly and truly the changes experienced by Wuxi.
William said while writing the book, he injected his personal attachment to Wuxi and his concerns to figures in his photos. At the book fair, William talked with Chinese and foreign readers about his love for and feelings about Wuxi. It’s known that Wuxi: Through an American’s Lens has been housed by Columbia University Libraries.
Besides, Painted Porcelain in Wuxi, a cultural brand of Wuxi is very eye-catching at the fair. The book tells the history and development of the blue and white porcelain and painted porcelain in Wuxi, as well as the achievements made by Wuxi in traditional Chinese paintings. Painted porcelain works created by famous local painters Yang Yuqing, Ye Jianxing Yan Keqin etc. collected in the book well interpret the perfect combination of porcelain and painting, showing distinct artistic characteristics, fresh and moist strokes, lively figures and profound artistic conception. Mr. Jim Cheng, Director of the C.V. Starr East Asian Library under Columbia University Libraries highly praised the artistic achievements of the book.
