出现于敦煌吐蕃期洞窟维摩诘经变赞普问疾图和涅槃经变中的赞普举哀图,是吐蕃统治下的特色题材,当属敦煌的吐蕃图像遗产,此类图像在吐蕃之后的晚唐及其后的同类经变中不再出现,说明了作为吐蕃统治符号图像的基本命运。因此,此类图像成为我们解读一个时代的图像符号,我们可以通过其在洞窟中的时代变化与完整保留现象,探讨吐蕃之后的敦煌社会状况。
