After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the Chinese Communist Party’s adherence to the political stance of anti-Japanese and democratic and free political environment attracted a large number of intellectuals to Yan’an. After they came to Yan’an, these intellectuals participated in the social, economic and cultural construction of the border area in succession and made important contributions to the economic development and social prosperity of the border area. However, how can Yan’an intellectuals guide people to participate in the social, economic and cultural development of the border areas in the context of a large gap between the cultural level and cognitive level of peasants in the Shensi-Kansu-Ningsia Border Region? How to construct the image of rural society and peasants in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia border area? In this paper, we use the woodcut prints in Yan’an as the starting point to explore several narrative ways of constructing rural areas by intellectuals in Yan’an from three aspects: enlightenment, endorsement and imagination.
