This article describes ways in which modern infrared missiles can detect and suppress flares that interfere with the reader in a variety of ways to avoid tracking flares in this area. The article begins with a brief introduction of how infrared missiles work, and then delves into the technology used by missiles to detect and counter flares. Infrared missiles use the target’s radiated infrared energy as a tracking source. All objects radiate infrared energy. The higher the temperature of an object, the more energy it radiates. As the temperature of the object increases, the shorter the peak wavelength of radiant energy (see Figure 1). Afterburner’s energy radiation peak at 1.5μm, while the military engine aircraft energy peak at 3μm.
