  A
Today, over six billion people live on the planet Earth. This means that there are very few places on Earth with no people. One place that has very few people is at the bottom of the Earth. In Antarctica, you will not find anyone who lives there all the time. This is because it is impossible for humans to live there all year round.
First, Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. For example, it can be minus 130 degrees in the winter. Humans cannot live in this kind of environment, because it is so cold that very few plants or animals live there. This means there are no farms and no places to find wild plants or animals to eat. In order for people to live in Antarctica, food must be sent there on boats, and this is expensive.
Another problem is that Antarctica can be dangerous. Many people think that it is safe to travel to Antarctica in the summer months when it is warmer. However, Antarctica is mostly ice, so when it is summer, the ice melts. When the ice melts, the ice can break. So people cannot travel around Antarctica during the summer. If the ice breaks, they could fall into the water.
The third serious problem is the sun. [A] Because Antarctica is mostly ice, there are no trees and, therefore, there is no shade. [B] Also, the ground is mostly white ice, so the sun bounces off it. [C] The warmth from the sun can melt the ice. [D] The light from the sky and the light from the ground can burn peoples skin and hurt their eyes. People must be very careful in this situation. For example, they must wear heavy sunglasses to protect their eyes. They must also cover their hands and faces all the time.
Antarctica is a tough place to live.

[A] William went to the local junkyard. He dug through the trash. He found a tractor fan, some car parts and bicycle parts. He melted plastic pipe over a fire, flattened (使变平) it and carved it into four blades (桨叶). He cut trees to make a tower. At last, William had a wobbly windmill (摇摇晃晃的风车) made from useless parts.
[B] The hot sun shone on Wimbe, a small town in Malawi, Africa. The rain did not fall. The crops died. People began to starve. They had to walk farther and farther to find water. Then, a 14-year-old boy decided to take action. He is William Kamkwamba.
[C] Today William is learning to be an engineer. He has plans to bring water and electricity to the towns of Malawi.
[D] When the wind blew, the blades tuned. It powered four lights in his parents home. A few years later, William built a machine that pumped water from beneath the ground. This let his mother grow a garden all year. In 2007, people found out about William. They gave him the money to go to school. He learned to make a sun-powered water pump. It kept his fathers fields moist.
[E] William was born into a poor family. He could not afford to stay in school. Fortunately, the United Nations had built a library near his home. He walked there each day. He used an English dictionary and science books. He taught himself to read English. He learned how engines work. At last he found what he had been hoping for: a picture of a windmill and how it worked.
