甜菜是一种侧重于靠个体发挥增产潜力的高产经济作物。它和一般作物相比,生育期较长,茎叶繁茂,一般从四月中下旬出苗至十月中收获,在长达160多天的生长期里,可以形成庞大的茎叶和块根。在通常情况下,一株甜菜可产一斤茎叶和一斤半左右块根(品种不同,根叶比例略有差别)。我区从1955年开始大面积种植甜菜。五十年代期间,一般亩产3000斤左右,块根含糖量在18%以上,单株块根重量平均一市斤左右。但是随着甜菜种植面积的扩大,单位面积产量逐年下降,到十年后的1965年,土默川地区的甜菜平均亩产只有1600多斤。
Beet is a high-yielding cash crop that focuses on the potential for yield enhancement by individuals. Compared with the general crop, it has a longer growing period and lush stems and leaves, and generally emerges from the middle of late April to the middle of October. During the growth period of more than 160 days, it can form huge stems, leaves and roots. Under normal circumstances, a sugar beet can produce a kilogram of stems and leaves and a pound of about half roots (different varieties, a slight difference in the proportion of roots and leaves). Since 1955, our district has planted large areas of beets. During the 1950s, the average mu yield of about 3000 pounds, root sugar content of 18% or more, an average weight of about one kilogram per plant root tuber. However, with the expansion of the area planted with sugar beet, the yield per unit area has been declining year by year. By 1965, ten mu years later, the average beet yield per mu of the T’ho-t’chuan area was only 1,600 kilos.
