Haoliang was a popular name during the years of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). He starred in a modern Beijing Opera play called the Legend of Red Lantern. Then he was involved in politics. Several years after the chaotic decade, he came back to theater performance again. As a politician, he was a failure, lost in the maelstrom he did not understand. But as a Beijing Opera master, he is popular and well loved.Born into a family of Beijing Opera artists in 1934, Qian began to learn the art from his father at age 6. In 1950 he entered China Academy of Traditional Opera, continuing to master the art of Wusheng, an acrobatic male role in Beijing Opera. Through his hard work under excellent coaching from masters, Qian soon became one of the best Wusheng actors in the field.
