After the non-catalytic upgrading of Maya top-off residue, the resulting product produced only a small change compared to the original residue. Tetralin and decalin were not found in the upgraded product. The product analysis was similar to that when no tetralin was added (see Table 4) when 1 wt% tetralin was added. Tetrahydronaphthalene delivers 2.6 mmol of hydrogen into the resid and the residua consumes 14.2 mmol of molecular hydrogen, so the reaction uses a total of 16.8 mmol of hydrogen.
