British economist Marshall discussed in the ”Principles of Economics“ the phenomenon that potatoes are low-grade commodities. When the economy is in recession, consumers become poorer and incomes fall so that consumers buy less potatoes and buy more potatoes. The more serious the crisis, the more obvious this effect. So in economics this phenomenon is called ”potato effect."
