In October 1997, Shanghai hosted China’s Eighth National Games, the largest sports meet since the founding of the People’s Republic. Prior to this, a total of 38 well - funded and well - designed stadiums had either been built or renovated in Shanghai. This article tells readers about the Shanghai Stadium, Shanghai International Tennis Centre, Shanghai Xianxia Tennis Centre, Luwan District Stadium and Shanghai International Gymnasium.The Eighth National Games Sports Complex carries the following characteristics:1) Construction was carried out in-the framework of reform in order to meet the needs of socialist market economy.2) Multiple contract system undertaken by enterprises, trade unions, universities and by making use of relevant municipal policies.3) 12 favorable policies have been granted by the municipal government to the benefit of the project.4) Departments of municipal administration, public utilities, power utilities, post and telecommunications and gardening have provided full support.5) In preparatory work the problem of singular function is overcome to meet the needs of multiple functions.6) Original models, structure and designs have resulted in emblem buildings of the city or districts of the city.7) New technologies and materials imported for the construction of the sports complex represent high standards and levels in the world and the best of their kind in China.8) Large scale, high speed, high standard and quality in construction 9) Shanghai’s sports area per capita increased from 0. 13m2 (25th in rank) per capita to 0. 9m2 (1st in rank).10) Timely establishment of stadium construction management organ to supervise the whole project.
