回顾和总结了煤割理定义、要素、成因的研究现状与存在问题。根据煤矿井下对煤割理系统的观测、室内实验,结合煤层气开发工程实践,指出割理是一种具有几何形态与固定组合样式的内生裂隙,成煤作用中由煤基质收缩产生的随机发育而无定向性的内生裂缝不是割理。端割理和面割理相伴而生,并随着煤化作用递进而新陈代谢。割理是古垂向应力与煤体积收缩共同作用的结果。研究煤化作用中煤大分子官能团重组的地球化学参数变化规律、煤官能团重组与古垂向应力的耦合关系、以及割理新陈代谢的方式和过程,是揭示煤割理形成机理的主攻方向。
