《大韶》原为东夷族乐舞,只在东夷族内部传承和修订。后华夏族的启出于政治目的,将其盗用并加以改造,从而形成两个不同的版本。这两个版本递相传承,一被商、陈、齐所继承,即孔子在齐所闻者;一被周、鲁所继承,即季札在鲁所闻者。另外,夏后启为《大韶》重新配制的乐歌——《九歌》,也被夏桀带到了楚地,成为屈原《九歌》的重要来源。
