This article argues that the pursuit of history by Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Vineyard” is characterized by the spatialization of time. Based on the discussion of Bernard Stiegler’s externalized memory, this article analyzes the time of the novel’s spatialization and reveals that the underlying reason is the loss of memory inherent in mass media and the externalization of memory. It reflects the postmodern American society in the mass media in the late 1960s, the decline of liberal political ideal and the return of conservatism.
