Because of the widespread use of water flooding and pressure maintenance in the field, many reservoirs have experienced the problem of fouling as the injection of water begins to break through. In most cases, formations of calcium and strontium combine with carbonate and sulfate to form scale at the wellhead. Due to their relative hardness and low solubility, it is less feasible to remove and prevent such measures as injecting inhibitors. Therefore, it is important to understand the extent of formation scaling and its damage to the formation. This report examines scale and fouling in porous media through experimental and theoretical analyzes of the extent to which deposit features affect the formation damage.
