From the family-centered subsistence agriculture society to the present-day industrial society centered on mass production, the nature of the work has undergone fundamental changes. As people gather in large factories, large corporations and a wide range of government departments far from their homes, the relationship between colleagues becomes more and more important. With the entry of Western countries into the postmodern society, the service industry or the tertiary industry is becoming the center of economic life day by day. The widespread application of high-tech means changes the nature of the work once again. In the same office, people are “imprisoned” in compartments, and they can not just go out and communicate with each other. Most of the work is done by telephone, computer and fax. Only the boss is free to move around and effectively monitor employees. Presumably in this environment, most people will feel very depressed. “Working a worm” reflects the emotions of office workers in post-modern society. I believe all kinds of people in the movie can see their shadow in our own offices.
