Tubes that can produce capillary phenomena are called capillaries. The smaller the inner diameter of the glass tube, the more pronounced the capillary phenomenon is. The red water thermometer has a small internal diameter and is the ideal capillary. If the capillary and the water tank are used as demonstrations, the phenomenon of rising of the infiltrating liquid (water) in the thin tube is obvious, but the phenomenon that the non-infiltrating liquid (mercury) decreases in the thin tube is not clear. Our improved demonstrator uses a connected vessel instead of a sink. The mercury level in the capillary is clearly lower than the mercury level in the coarse glass tube.
