Objective To observe whether the gonads of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are damaged. Methods The levels of serum estradiol (E2), progesterone (PROG), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) in 66 males with SARS were detected by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay And compared with 40 healthy controls. Results The serum levels of E2 and PROG in patients with SARS were significantly lower than those in the control group (P <0.01). The contents of FSH, LH and PRL in patients with SARS were significantly higher than those in the control group (P <0.01). Serum E2 levels in patients with severe SARS were significantly lower than those in the common type. Hormone levels recovered more slowly than clinical symptoms improved. Conclusion Abnormal levels of neutral hormone in patients with SARS suggest that the change of sex hormones may be one of the links in the pathogenesis of SARS. The recovery of sex hormones in SARS may be a slow process.
