The theme conception of Steinbeck ’s novels embodies the reflection of American intellectuals in three aspects in the field of thought in the 1930s: first, the intellectuals’ thinking on religion after the Great Depression; secondly, the thinking of “collective” and “ Personal ”what is more important than the light of the question, the third is the“ teleological thinking ”and“ non-goal thinking ”thinking, this thinking is an extension of religious thinking. “Skoposthese ” emphasizes that everything in the world exists and is dominated by the gods purposely, and “non-goal theory” is opposed to fatalism. The interpretation of the theme of Steinbeck’s novels helps to better understand the humanistic thinking of American intellectuals in the 1930s.
