刘勰的《文心雕龙》“体大思精”,是一部集六朝以前文学理论之大成,并不时有自己独到见解的巨著。刘勰对情的认识是《文心雕龙》重点所在,全书几乎没有一篇不涉及情的概念,情字见于全书达一百处以上,内涵丰富,角度多变,并且往往体现于情与其他范畴的关系(尤其是情与采的关系)的论述。 《明诗》篇先言诗之源起,引“诗言志”说,接着说到:“诗者,持也,持人情性。三日之蔽,义归无邪,持之为训,有符焉尔。”按《诗纬·含神雾》云:“诗者,持也。”为刘勰所本。持有制义,“持人情性”就是节制人的情感。这本是汉儒因为言志说似有自由放纵之嫌而作的补充修正,有以伦理学之善去规范人性论之真的意义。是谓“情正”,并有孔子所概括的《三百篇》义归“无邪”为最权威的证明与范本,尽管这种概括本由断章取义与附会所致。这是儒家诗学重要原则之一,刘勰继承之,并且深信不疑。但是刘勰情感论的重点不在此。
