鼓是一种打击乐器,人们常见的鼓是用木质为鼓腔,用皮革蒙上两端的皮鼓。在我国南方和西南少数民族地区,使用一种全部用铜制作的鼓,故名铜鼓。关于铜鼓的记载最早见于《后汉书·马援传》:“援好骑,善别名马,于交阯得骆越铜鼓,乃铸为马式,还上之。”历代官私古籍中对铜鼓也有描述,唐《通典》记:“铜鼓,铸铜为之,虚其一面,覆而击其上。”南宋诗人范成大说:铜鼓“其制如坐墩,而空其下,满鼓皆细花纹,极工致,四角有小蟾蜍。”清人屈大钧《广东新语》书中对铜鼓也有详细记录。从史书记载及现存铜鼓可以对其形状概括为:鼓体正圆,鼓面平坦,鼓胸突出,束腰张足,
