在现代汉语和现代日语中均使用“工夫”表示“做事所费的精力”。从词汇史的角度,通过对汉日语料库中所出现的“工夫”进行考察和对比,可以厘清二者的关系与相互影响,明确“工夫”由汉语传至日语的过程以及其间所发生的意义变迁。古汉语的“工夫”和古日语的「工夫」作为一个名词具有相同的词义。然而,随着时代的发展,古汉语“工夫”的义项发生了变化,特别是在隋唐五代前后衍生出了新的含义;相比之下,日语「工夫」之“佛教中指努力修行”义项已越来越少地被使用,由此说明汉日“工夫”一词在词义上产生了变迁。
