《西厢记》是元杂剧中的长篇巨制,在杂剧衰微之后依然倍受明人尊崇。它的篇幅结构顺应了中国“叙事诗”发展壮大的历史要求,摆脱了普通元杂剧“一本四折”的凝固模式,开始具备以精工细笔演述长篇巨制、描述纷纭繁复故事的能力,成为中国戏曲的“千古传奇之祖”,其谨严和技巧几乎为后世不可企及。它才情富丽,典雅工丽的文人乐府气味与明代的审美时尚极为符合。正是这两点,使它超越了元杂剧衰落的普遍命运。
“The Romance of the West Chamber” is a long compilation of Yuan Zaju, still much revered after the decline of Zaju. Its length structure conforms to the historical requirement of “narrative poem” development and growth in China and gets rid of the “one-for-one, four-fold” solidification mode of the ordinary Yuan Zaju.
