This article discusses the application of distributed STBC in a cooperative relay network composed of RSs with multiple antennas. Applying the Chernoff limit to the bit error rate in the Rayleigh fading channel proves that the BER is more sensitive to the spatial correlation in the MIMO channel than the receiving power of the receiving side of the cooperative RS. The selection criteria for a cooperative antenna that yields the best bit error rate (BER) performance are given where the total number of available antennas must exceed the number of antennas required for STBC discussions.
