在树桩盆景的品赏中,“老”是其审美品评的条件之一,它集中体现在枝干上。可是,这种“老”指的是老骥伏枥的苍劲之美,而非苍老之气,时下许多制作者及欣赏者常常将两者混为一谈。实则不然,它们之间存在着本质的区别,其所表现的精神境界亦不同,对它们应加以明确的区分。苍老,顾名思义,老态龙钟,凄苍而乏朝气,它主要是在作技术、表现方式上,虽顺乎自然中老树的情调,却只是自然苍老之态的模仿,老而无势,与盆景创作中“源于自然而高于自然”的法则不符,难以引发欣赏者的诗情画意(情感),从根本上讲,属于盆栽范畴。苍老所制造的是一种凄寂败落之感,给人的延续联想是老至将死的心理动向。
