The Function of Task—based Language Teaching in English teaching

  【Abstract】With the continuous reform of English teaching,Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) comes out and is promoted.The author introduces and analyzes the meaning of TBLT,studies its’ function in English teaching to find out its’necessity.

  1.The basic connotation of TBLT
  Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT) is a teaching approach which is task-based and students-centered.This teaching theory is established by many western and eastern scholars on the basis of a large of number of teaching experience since 1980s,which has an important impact on teaching in high education and now is widely recognized and adopted.The core and objects of TBLT is“mission”,and the implementers are teachers and students.It includes three parts:first,the teacher“setting the mission”,second,the students“finish the mission”,third,the teacher check the result of the students“mission”.During the procedure,the teacher and students form a positive interaction and communication,and the students were also unknowingly gain the knowledge.because of the“mission”,the students also enjoy the communication and cooperation.
  2.The problems in English teaching nowadays
  2.1 The teaching mode needs to be improved.As a second language,English learning is not as easy as mother tongue.Usually,it is carried out in a particular environment,such as classroom.At present,most of the college English teachers tend to adopt the “fill canard” knowledge instill mode which the students are only the passive acceptance object of the theoretical knowledge.Teacher is the subject of the practice.Obviously,it ignores the learning subject-the students.It is so dull that it greatly restricts the sustainable development of English teaching.Therefore,if the English teachers want to improve the English teaching method to gain sound effects,they must take the initiative to create the appropriate English learning environment,improve and update the English teaching mode.
  2.2 English learning“passivized”.In English teaching,often it is the teacher rather than the student in the dominant position.Students are mostly in a“passivized”state.There is lack necessary communication and interaction between the teacher and students.The teacher is used to teaching stereo-typically according to the textbook and it makes the students feel so boring that they have no interest to think.They just mechanically take notes and lack of initiative and enthusiasm in the English learning.   2.3 Outdated teaching ideas and methods.In English teaching,teaching ideas and methods are so old that it restricts the teaching quality and efficiency.Most college English teachings have limitations.First,they pay more attention to vocabulary and grammar and ignore the oral English communication.Second,the traditional teaching is very rigid and teaching method is sole.Many teachers do not take advantage of the characteristics of the language acquisition in English teaching.They just teaching,greatly weakened the students’ enthusiasm in learning English.As a result led to their poor English communication ability.
  3.The function of TBLT in English teaching
  3.1 TBLT is one of the most effective ways to promote English education.TBLT can break the teaching limitations between the class and extracurricular English education.It can extend the class teaching to extracurricular activities so as to put the book knowledge and practical usage together.which is good for the English teaching.
  3.2 the role of teacher is changing.In order to carry out the TBLT,firstly,it needs the teachers’ guide.The teacher needs to set a feasible task,which should be real,interesting and workable.Then,the teacher should analyze the task to make the students know clearly about it.By this to improve the students’ learning enthusiasm.So the TBLT changes the status between the teacher and students.It makes the students centered.The teacher is only the Participant,organizer and guide.
  3.3 “students-students” interaction strengthened.In the “task finishing” procedure.the students need not only focus on listening,speaking,reading,and writing,but also communicating and cooperating with their partner.This teaching mode can fully improve the students’ ability,including English learning ability; Cooperating ability; Comprehensive academic ability.

  In short,TBLT not only liven up the students’ interest in learning English but also can enlighten the teachers to update teaching ideas,adopt new teaching methods to promote the teaching quality and efficiency.so the function of TBLT is more and more important.
