In Europe, β-blockers are the drug of choice for the treatment of hypertension. In the United States, β-blockers have been used clinically in recent years. Antihypertensive drugs used after diuretics have largely replaced other traditional antihypertensive drugs such as methyldopa and clonidine. Beta-blockers are important drugs for the treatment of hypertension in the eighties. Other drugs such as invertase inhibitors, calcium antagonists and selective serotonin antagonists, ketanserin, are still in clinical trials. Beta-blockers may be the backbone of anti-hypertensive drugs, probably in the last decade.
