According to statistics released by Ambassador B.K. Zutsai, Chairman of the Trade and Contracts Department of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), at the annual meeting on January 25, 1994. The world production in 1993 was only slightly higher than 2% from the previous year. The growth in both world trade and production figures is still lower than the average of the previous decade, proving that the period from 1989 to 1993 was still a period of slowing world economic growth. Although the pace of progress in world trade and economic activities has slowed down, there can also be cautious optimism about the economic recovery in 1994. One of the reasons is that the slowdown in 1993 was mostly due to the West.
