Objective To investigate the clinical significance of ceruloplasmin (CER) in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetic retinopathy. Methods 112 subjects were divided into 3 groups: Ⅰ: 46 cases of diabetic retinopathy (DR) group; Ⅱ: 46 cases of non-diabetic retinopathy (NDR) group; Ⅲ: 20 cases of healthy control group. Serum CER was detected by rate nephelometry and the level of serum CER was compared between groups. Results The levels of serum CER in patients Ⅰ and Ⅱ were significantly higher than those in control group (P <0.01). The levels of serum CER in patients with DR were significantly higher than those in patients with NDR (P <0.01). Conclusions The change of serum CER level is involved in the occurrence and development of DR, which is closely related to the degree of lesion.
