This article aims to reveal the mentality of Holden in The Catcher in the Rye, to interpret the novel’s profound critique of society, Holden’s strategy of rebellion and its rebellious paradox, and Holden’s words and deeds Zen Zen enlightenment coincides with the tendency and performance. The article holds that Holden’s insurrection and his Zen-type enlightenment are all the solutions he adopted to solve the conflict between the inner world and the outer world separately and internally. His rebellion is doomed to be fruitless due to its inherent paradox, and his Zen-like behavior, while helping to alleviate the conflict, can lead him into a world of purely imaginative personal utopia .
