Driven by the sustained economic and trade development in mainland China and the return of Hong Kong, the shipping industry in Hong Kong continued its good momentum of growth. In the first half of 1997, the handling capacity of Hong Kong’s port containers exceeded 6 million TEUs. (Statistics from the Census and Statistics Department show that in the first five months of 1997, the handling capacity of Hong Kong’s port containers reached 5.5164 million TEU, an increase of 9.01% over the same period of last year.
