Host: Well she’s a Hollywood legend and the exercise 1)guru behind the 80s 2)aerobics 3)craze. Jane Fonda, now 76 years young, believe me, looks as good as ever. She’s in Australia to celebrate the re-launch of “Fitness First”, and we sat down to talk about her incredible life.
(Soundbite of Jane’s aerobic video)
Host: You were the original 4)motivator. I mean that you owned the 80s, when it came to fitness…
Jane: Yeah.
Host: …and it was all about you.
Jane: Well, it was developed because what I did worked.(Soundbite of Jane’s aerobic video)
Host: Spend a Saturday afternoon “doing Jane”.
Jane: Yeah, “doing Jane”, that’s right, and it became a social experience, and I thought of that when I was at the Fitness First gym here. They’re small groups and it becomes a social experience, like “doing Jane” did.
Host: We’ve come a long way from 5)leggings and 6)lycra, haven’t we? (Laughs)
Jane: We have, But it’s not just the leggings and lycra’cause actually there were a few people in there that had leggings and lycra.
Host: What’s it like for you looking back at those 7)fabulous videos from the 80s?
Jane: I’m very proud of what I did. You know, women weren’t supposed to have muscles and be fit back then, and it changed everything.
(Soundbite of Jane’s aerobic video)
Host: You have an incredible light inside you. How much of that do you put down to pursuing fitness so much through your life?
Jane: I think it had a lot to do with that I come from a long line of depressed people (laughs) on both sides of my family, and the fact that, you know, that I’ve worked out most of my life, you know, that I’ve been fit most of my life, I think, has helped my mind as much as my body. I’m 76 and I’ve never been happier.
Host: Once upon a time would it have been so easy to say so easily, “I’m 76 now”, because Hollywood is so renowned for its obsession with youth culture?
Jane: Yeah, it still is. It’s hard.
Host: Yeah.
Jane: Yeah. You know, I think it’s important to let women know that just because you’re older doesn’t mean life is over, or, you know, that you have to give up. I’m not only older, but I have a fake hip and a fake knee, and, you know, I feel lucky to be alive at a time where, if something doesn’t work, you just replace it. Host: (laughs) We’re in awards season, of course, in Hollywood, at the moment, and we’re seeing more and more, all these great roles… Jane: All more and more Australian actors comin’ and takin’the awards away.
Host: So right. (laughing) And, of course, you’re still acting as well. You just played Nancy Reagan.
Jane: That was fun.
(Soundbite of movie, “The Butler”)
Jane: (as Nancy Reagan) I’d like to invite you to the State Dinner next week.
Forest Whitaker: (as Cecil Gaines) I’m bringin’ in my tray?
Jane: (as Nancy Reagan) No. Not as a…not as a butler, Cecil. I’m inviting you as a guest.
Host: That role, of course, of Nancy Reagan, was in “The Butler”. A lot of talk that Oprah has been 8)snubbed by not getting that Oscar 9)nomination.
Jane: Yes.
Host: You think she was robbed?
Jane: Totally. I think she gave a great performance.
Oprah Winfrey: (as Gloria Gaines) I don’t know how many stories you gonna hear, ’cause they done swore him to some kinda secret code.
Jane: You forgot it was Oprah. That’s hard to do.
Host: I have to admit you starred in one of my favorite 10)comedies of all time, Barefoot in the Park…
Jane: Oh, I know that.
Host: …with Robert Redford.
Jane: Oh, It’s one of my favorites too…
Host: Corrie…
Jane: …and it holds up.
(Soundbite of movie, “Barefoot in the Park”)
Jane: (as Corrie Bratter) You gonna have to work tonight?
Robert Redford: (as Paul Bratter ) Yeah, I’m gonna go over the 11)affidavits. This 12)furrier is 13)suing a woman for non-payment of bills. And I’ve got the furrier.
Jane: (as Corrie Bratter) I have a black lace nightgown. Host: It really does.
Jane: It really holds up.
Host: I saw it again on a rainy Saturday afternoon about 6 months ago, and I thought…
Jane: It’s still funny.
Host: …this’ll be interesting, because I was a kid when I first saw it…
Jane: Yeah. Comedies don’t always, you know, go through, you know, have legs and last, but that one really did. It’s one of Neil Simon’s best, and I always—I did three movies with Redford and I fell in love with him every time.
Host: And he’s still got it.
Jane: Oh, god, he’s just the best.
Host: Would you every consider looking at doing another movie together?
Jane: Well, we’ve talked about it, and he offered me one, but I didn’t like the role enough to say yes, but I hope before we die we will.
Host: I think you’ve got a lot of life still left in you. Jane: (laughing) I hope so.
