On June 8, 2004, British writer Andrea Levy won 2004 Oregon Literature with a novel, “Small Island,” a Jamaican immigrant who came to London after World War II prize. The Orange Literature Prize was set up to encourage female novelists in the English-speaking world, starting in 1996, because the 1991 Booker Prize short list was all men and made a lot of people think they had to set up a Women’s Literature Award to fight back this phenomenon. Nine female writers have won this award since their inception, and they were awarded in 1996
