刘季英先生(1887-1954)是我的外祖父,笔者从小就生活在老人膝前,从北京到天津,从苏州到杭州,耳闻目睹家中许多轶事,年少时笔者只知外公是位知识渊博的慈祥老人,成年后浏览了学派书籍和有关资料,始知外公是位出身名门、学贯中西的儒家学者,其毕生最主要的成就在于太谷学派《易》学的继承和发扬。有学者认为“在太谷学派第四代弟子中,当算刘大绅(季英)的学术成就为最高……算得上是奏出了太谷之学较为奇特的历史休止符”。
Mr. Liu Jianying (1887-1954), my grandfather, lived in front of the elders from an early age. From Beijing to Tianjin, from Suzhou to Hangzhou, I heard many anecdotes in my family. Before they knew that their grandfather was a well-known Confucian scholar who learned both Chinese and Western traditions, his most important achievement in his lifetime lay in the inheritance and development of the Taigu School of Learning. Some scholars believe that “in the fourth generation of the Taigu school disciples, when considered Liu Dashen (Ji Ying) academic achievement is the highest ... ... is regarded as playing a more strange Taigu School of history of the rest.”
